Careers at Adventure Minds

We're looking for
mentors.
Not activity leaders.

Adventure Minds is building something real — outdoor programs that genuinely develop young people. Our mentors are the most important part of what we do. If you feel the weight of that, read on.

"The activity is the vehicle. The development is the destination. The mentor is the difference."

What we believe

This is not a supervision role.
It is a leadership role.

Adventure Minds runs outdoor, adventure-based programs for homeschool young people aged 9–18. But what we are actually doing is developing character, confidence, and belonging — and that work only happens because of the people who show up week after week to lead it.

Mentors, not facilitators

Your title is Mentor. Your job is to take genuine responsibility for the growth of the young people in your care — not just to run the day's activities. Mentorship is a relationship, not a task. It is a felt sense of ownership over whether a young person is actually developing.

Consistency builds trust

Young people don't open up to someone they've met twice. They open up to someone who shows up the same way, week after week, for months. We are looking for people who understand that showing up consistently is itself a form of leadership.

Challenge is part of the program

We believe young people are capable of more than they are currently being asked for. Real challenge, real culture, and real mentors make a difference that lasts. This is not a soft program, and we don't pretend to be one.

Long-term, not fill-in

We are a small business building something that matters. We are looking for people who want to grow with us — to grow with their group, take ownership of their community, and be part of building something beyond the next few sessions.

Who we're looking for

The standard is high.
For good reason.

We hire for character as much as qualifications — but we also require real, consistent, relevant experience. Vague applications will not be considered.

Required — you must have these
  • Minimum 2 years of consistent experience working with groups of young people in a leadership or facilitation role — not scattered casual work, but sustained, genuine experience
  • Minimum 1 year of consistent outdoor recreation experience working with young people
  • Experience planning and running your own sessions — you have built run sheets, owned the delivery, and designed the day yourself
  • Experience building or contributing to risk assessments for outdoor activities
  • Experience leading outdoor expeditions or adventure activities (hikes, camping, water activities, climbing)
  • Current Blue Card (or willingness to obtain before starting)
  • Current First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain before starting)
  • Reliable transport
Highly preferred — strong advantage
  • Wilderness First Aid certification
  • Certificate III or higher in Outdoor Recreation, Outdoor Leadership, or a related field
  • Formal risk management training or qualifications
  • Yellow Card
  • Additional qualifications in youth work, education, sport, or a related field

This role is not for you if you are looking for flexible casual work around other commitments, you have not consistently led group programs with young people before, or you want someone else to design the sessions while you show up and run them. People who are looking for casual fill-in work should look elsewhere — we are building something real and we need people who are too.
